In Brandon, O’Brien’s Irish Pub & Grill is as much a focal point for the community as it is a watering hole. Sure, it’s got one of the best craft beer selections around, with a nice mix of Europe’s historical best and some fine local micro-brewery product, like the Cigar City Jai-Alai IPA. And where else can you find six gourmet pizza selections, along with those old standbys like mum’s shepherd pie and bangers and mash? But O’Brien’s also has heart. The pub had a fish fry to raise money for a local sheriff’s deputy suffering from bone cancer. It also has a sense of humor. There’s a limerick competition on June 16, a date picked throughout the Hibernian island to celebrate the Irish writer James Joyce. In short, the pub has soul.
